Women in an abusive relationship might need to escape suddenly. To prepare for that, the U.S. National Women's Health Information Center suggests that certain items be collected and kept in a safe place until needed.
Items on the recommended list include:
Identification. Birth certificates, Social Security cards, driver's license, passports, photo identifications, "green cards" and welfare IDs.
-
Personal papers. Marriage certificate, divorce papers, custody orders, legal protection or restraining order, health insurance documents and cards, medical records, kids' school records, investment records and account numbers, work permits, immigration papers, house or apartment lease or deed, vehicle title and registration, vehicle insurance information.
-
Funds. Cash, credit cards, ATM card, checkbook, bank books and deposit slips.
-
Keys. For the house, car, post office box and safety deposit box.
-
Communication means. Cell phone, telephone calling card and address book.
-
Medications. At least a month's supply of all medicines and a copy of all prescriptions.
The agency also suggests that women take jewelry or small objects that could be sold if money is needed.
And it says not to forget to include pictures, keepsakes and some toys and books for the kids -- all things to help everyone cope.
